BREAKOUT SESSIONS:
NO RISK. NO REWARD. GLOBAL BUSINESS IS AN INCREASINGLY RISKY BUSINESS
Doing business internationally is becoming an increasingly risky business for New Zealand companies. The challenges facing businesses, specifically in the areas of country, political, cyber, financial and supply chain risks, have been increasing steadily the past few years and appear to have reached new heights in 2019.
The pace of change, triggered by changes in demand and environment, has caught many business leaders by surprise, threatening their very existence. Competition and an increasingly tough trading environment have squeezed margins so tight on existing business models that something had to give. And that something is the traditional way of doing business, now moving toward new thinking around risk management. Every company has risk and some risks you take on and cannot avoid. Being aware of the risk and managing it properly will allow you to run your company more profitably. We are in a global world and that means we are not aware of all the risks we will face from a geopolitical standpoint. But it’s imperative to include the conversation about risk and steps you can take to mitigate or minimize the risk to the best of your ability.
BREAKOUT #1: The pace of digital change
The biggest areas of change are supply chain and environmental risk. Tensions in the geo-political landscape are creating uncertainty in supply chains. The overall risk landscape is also exacerbated by the pace of technological change and the move to a technology-connected world including the Internet of Things (IoT). The shifts in technology are creating strategic risks for all businesses and you really need to understand the impacts.
Our four panelists will share how their business has coped and is addressing these risks in their business
Nick Coubray – CEO, Howick Ltd |
Eddy Pereira – General Manager, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare |
Wade Gillooly – Chief Bagel Guy, ABE’s Bagels Ltd |
Jeremy Turner – VP Operations and Supply Chain, Aeroqual |
BREAKOUT #2: Services sector provides risk, but opportunity
Exporting services can be more difficult and risky in comparison to products, because they are intangible, where physical products can be touched, tested and compared. Again, international success relies on understanding the global risk landscape. Whether it is trade barriers or variances in employment levels, trying to understand what’s going on in different markets can be intimidating for a lot of New Zealand SMEs.
Our four panelists will share their experience of the risk landscape for businesses in the services sector
Richard Conway – founder & CEO, PureSEO |
Carmen Vicelich – Chief Executive Officer, Valocity |
Roy Moody – Chief Executive Officer, vWork |
BREAKOUT #3: Innovation is crucial to risk planning
Innovative companies are better equipped to manage risks. Businesses that demonstrate agility are typically also those tackling risks imposed by the wider environment. Innovation can take many forms, but in today’s competitive economy it’s about solving a solution for a customer. The future belongs to businesses that embrace the new power of the customer in a global, direct and transparent marketplace.
Our four panelists will share innovative strategies they are employing to future-proof their business
Sarah Sherriff – Head of Export and Finance, FIX & FOGG |
Pablo Kraus – Managing Director, Ecostore |
Jarred Clayton – Chief Operating Officer – EROAD |
BREAKOUT #4: Fire drill as a risk mitigation tactic
Today, risk has taken on a bigger role and has moved into the executive suite. Think of risk mitigation like a fire drill – practicing how to get in and out of a building. That’s what companies need to do across the board, test systems and ensure they have asked the right questions and do proper due diligence. Every company’s risk tolerances and key issues are different, but all companies need to include risk management in their daily practices. While a company can’t predict the future, it can be valuable to use the past experiences of others to develop a risk management programme to help you avoid unnecessary risks and ensure your future success.
Our four panelists will share examples of how planning for the unexpected and being proactive instead of reactive paid off in their business
Fiona Carrick – Group Manager Resilience Integration and Governance, Fonterra |
Natalie Bilyard – Group General Manager, Glidepath Ltd |
Richard Marshall – General Manager Supply Chain – Douglas Pharmaceuticals |
Brian Astridge – Group Technical Services Manager, Tegel Foods Ltd |
