MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Kia ora koutou,

For the first time in a long time, the ExportNZ team have been able to represent our exporters overseas. I was fortunate to join the New Zealand Taiwan Business Council on their first delegation visit in five years to Taipei to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the ANZTEC agreement, while BusinessNZ’s Director of Advocacy, Catherine Beard, and three of ExportNZ’s Advisory Board members travelled to India with the India New Zealand Business Council as part of a large contingent of businesses to Delhi. Both trips were incredibly valuable – to see for ourselves what is happening in these markets, represent our exporters on the ground, and to speak with individuals and businesses involved in cross-border trade.

Congratulations to the fifty exporters and businesses who are finalists for this year’s New Zealand International Business Awards – especially those who also took our ExportNZ regional awards this year. We look forward to celebrating exporting excellence on the 23rd November – click here to see this year’s finalists and for information on how to join in on the evening. A special thanks to New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for organising these prestigious awards.

Finally, last month we released our Pre-Election Report: State of Play for New Zealand’s Export Sector. We’ve had some really good feedback on our recommendations, so a big, big thank you to those who participated in our pre-election engagements, AOG Roadshow, and responded to our ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer Survey this year!

The Exporter

The Ministerial Strategic Advisory Group on Trade (MSAGOT) commissioned this report from Sense Partners to get a better understanding of how prepared New Zealand businesses are for market disruptions. The Group is also interested in what support businesses need from the government to build resilience and manage these risks. The report highlights the steps exporters can take to strengthen their resilience. It also looks at the role that Government plays; the steps that it has already taken; and the areas where further work might be done to better foresee risk and build resilience.

The research papers on improving New Zealand's resilience to trade shocks, June 2023, can be found here:

ExportNZ's 2023 Pre-Election Report

The health of New Zealand’s export sector is crucial to the state of our country’s economy. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand has experienced ballooning trade deficit and this cannot continue. It is vital, then, that the next Government pays attention to the issues and the opportunities that our exporters see in both the short and long term to ensure New Zealand returns to a trade surplus.

Opportunities in India

Representing ExportNZ and BusinessNZ, Catherine Beard, Director Advocacy, had the opportunity to participate in and lend our support to a significant New Zealand business trade mission to India. This remarkable journey brought together 50 enthusiastic delegates from diverse sectors, uniting under the banner of five peak industry groups.

ExportNZ and DHL Export Barometer

In an election year, the business environment both at home and abroad remains tricky to navigate for New Zealand exporters and as evidence showcased in this year’s 2023 ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer report, there are several issues that cause concern for exporters.

According to the research conducted among 250 New Zealand exporters, another year of increasing costs has been the theme over the past 12 months and is a major barrier to exporting. While supply chains are easing around the world, the rise in interest rates and the upward pressure on costs of doing business and living has meant that exporters are certainly feeling the pressure at home.

Circular Economy and Bioeconomy Strategy

This recognises that circular approaches have a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Circular approaches reduce greenhouse gas emissions by radically increasing the efficiency of resources used within the economy. This is achieved by designing out waste and pollution, keeping resources in use for as long as possible, then recovering and repurposing products and materials at the end of their lifecycle. Studies indicate countries can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 to 39% by adopting ambitious circular approaches.

New Zealand Product Accelerator

As part of its response to the Industry Transformation Plan for Advanced Manufacturing, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has initiated an independent review of the New Zealand Product Accelerator. The reviewers are currently examining the impact of the Product Accelerator, including potential options to support advanced manufacturing businesses. As part of this review, they are seeking the views of manufacturing businesses, including perspectives from those who are unaware of the Product Accelerator and who have not used its services. It would be incredibly helpful if you could please take 5 minutes to complete a short online survey below.

MBIE: eInvoicing Helps Reduce invoice Fraud Risk

All organisations, regardless of size, are susceptible to invoice fraud. There are potentially devastating impacts to your bottom line, cash flow and reputation.

So, it’s not surprising that security is one of the biggest drawcards of eInvoicing.

eInvoicing is the secure, digital exchange of invoice information between suppliers’ and buyers’ accounting systems. It minimises the risk of fake or compromised invoices, unlike paper or emailed PDF invoices that can be intercepted and tampered with.
