This week, New Zealands trade agenda is front and centre as both Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Trade and Export Growth Minister Damien O’Connor travel to Europe and Australia for trade, tourism and foreign policy events. We will be watching closely for any updates on the progress of the NZ-EU FTA.

All Eyes On PM’s Visit to Brussels

Senior Officials have been camped in Europe for weeks and Minister O’Connor has stayed on after the WTO Ministerial to be in Brussels.  Does this mean that the PM will be able to reach “agreement in principle” in the NZ EU FTA negotiation when she visits Brussels next week?

There are concerns in some circles that the political pressure is on for an agreement, even though the outcome for some sectors may not be as good as the sector was hoping for.  Dairy and beef are mentioned as sectors still needing further work. The dairy industry is also watching the geographical indications element of the negotiation closely.  Will we still be able to buy New Zealand made parmesan cheese after this Agreement?

Other elements of the intellectual property chapter will be of interest to the pharmaceutical, book and film industries.

This year, the ExportNZ ASB Hawkes Bay Export Awards will be held on Thursday 25 Aug 2022.

These awards are a celebration of all the businesses making a name for their regions on the world stage.

Te Whakahaere Āhuarangi Limited is undertaking market analysis to assess the current and future supply and demand for voluntary offsets in New Zealand for the Carbon Neutral Government Programme. The research will identify opportunities to develop and incentivise the market for voluntary offsets. Businesses are invited to participate in a survey that will help inform MfE about the type of offset projects that individual businesses can support, and the scale needed to meet current and future demand for offsets.

The "Mobileheroes 2022 Connectivity Innovation Challenge" is the longest-running ICT tech contest in Taiwan. The organiser is inviting global startups to present their products/solutions by using ICT technology or AI. For example communication software, mobile communication and IoT applications.

Merit Award winner: USD 15,000.
Short-listed teams will be given access to mentorship, Taiwan’s Ecosystem and opportunities to meet with potential investors.

Vietnam is being touted as a good option for Kiwi exporters looking to diversify where they sell their goods, as the rocky international market hits many of our traditional trading partners hard.

The South East Asian nation's economy is now one of the strongest in the region - thanks in large part to its management of Covid-19. A recent Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade report has highlighted how Vietnam has grown in the space of just one generation, from being one of the poorest countries in the world to an "almost" middle-income country.

The report prepared by the New Zealand High Embassy in Ha Noi says Vietnam's growth has surpassed many of its closest neighbours.

A California connection has New Zealand Merino Company (NZM) leaders positive they can top the more than $105 million in sales this year.

The company has formed a partnership with a Silicon Valley technology platform called Actual to tap into some of its smartest innovation and technology brains.

This will be woven into NZM’s model of long-term contracts, "storytelling" and premiums through its ZQRX programme with brand partners such as Smartwool, Allbirds icebreaker and Reda.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise – Te Taurapa Tūhono (NZTE) has released new resources on sustainable packaging for New Zealand exporters, in response to global trends and requirements for businesses to reduce waste and non-renewable material use.

NZTE's resources were prepared based on market intelligence from its offices overseas, with further support from industry expert and packaging consultant Nikki Withington.
