Trade Update

In this month's trade update I cover the EU FTA Negotiations, which have now been officially launched. This is a historic and positive development, but it will not be an easy negotiation. Expect it to take at least 2 years. How will the Labour, Green, NZ First Government regard the EU proposed investment court when they consider the detail? What will the EU be pushing for on Intellectual Property and will this be much different from what the US was pushing for in TPP?...

I also cover the Pacific Alliance, and the growing prospect of a trade war between the US and other major economies. There are several fronts open in this potential “war”. More...

Winning formula - exporter story of the month

When hearing about Blue River Dairy’s journey to success, I can’t help but think of famous musicians – such as Ed Sheeran – who slaved away relatively unknown for years before they hit the big time.

You may have seen Blue River Dairy sheep’s milk cheese in NZ supermarkets, but the company’s reach and product range is now much larger than that as it’s enjoying astronomical growth – ranking 10th in the 2017 Deloitte Fast 50.

Gareth Lyness, Marketing and Supply Chain Manager, explains how the turning point came in 2015... More->>

Alternative protein: trends, challenges, opportunities

New Zealand has built powerhouse export industries around high-quality animal protein, which means alternative proteins are a game-changer we can't afford to ignore. New Zealand's animal-based protein export revenue alone accounts for 60% of our total primary exports. This demand will grow as the global population is set to increase to 8.1 billion by 2025.

MPI and Plant & Food Research's new report on protein consumption trends around the world – and how New Zealand exporters can rise to the challenge – was commissioned to assess consumer responses to protein and highlight the potential impacts to the New Zealand agricultural industry.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was announced in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping. BRI promotes closer ties between countries through development-led growth along ancient trade routes linking China across Eurasia to Europe, and more modern trade routes including China across the South Pacific to New Zealand and Latin America.

In March 2017, NZ and China signed a non-binding Memorandum of Arrangement under which the countries agreed to work together in specified areas including upgrading the FTA and expanding trade and investment.

In August 2017, the NZ China Council commissioned PwC to prepare a report which placed BRI in context for New Zealand. The emphasis is how we can leverage BRI to expand and enhance connectivity with China and other countries along the Belt and Road. Four opportunities identified for New Zealand to engage with BRI are:

  • Trade facilitation (incorporating biosecurity, customs clearance and supply chain hubbing)
  • New Zealand as a conduit to Latin America
  • Innovation
  • The creative sector.
