Message from the executive director

We hope exporters are coping with the level 4 lockdown.  We know it is frustrating for those that are not deemed essential businesses and we know you don’t want to let your international clients down.  We continue to talk to the Government on your behalf and you can see some of the public commentary below.  Lets hope the vaccination rates continue at pace and we don’t have to be in this position again!  As always, if we can help, please get in touch.

August Trade Update

All ports are operating and both imports and exports are being loaded and unloaded.  Freight is considered an essential service and even non-essential products are able to be transported to and from ports.  Production and harvesting of these products may be a different matter.  The forestry sector is one where some issues are being experienced.  These are being worked through.

On the trade policy front the focus is squarely on the New Zealand – United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

Childcare available again for workers in Alert Level 4 businesses and services

The Government is restarting childcare for workers in Alert Level 4 businesses and services, which was available during last year’s national lockdown, Education Minister Chris Hipkins said today.

Primary producers charter ships to beat global ports logjam

New Zealand's biggest fruit, meat and seafood producers are paying up to double the odds to charter ships to the lucrative markets of Asia, Europe and the USA.

It will add to the consumer price of this country's food in Northern Hemisphere supermarket chillers or cut into export margins – but for some producers, the alternative is dumping their produce.

Industrial lockdown plan fell on deaf ears, business leader says

The first Level 4 lockdown hit big manufacturers hard. But when one came up with a plan to allow plants to stay open safely, the Government wouldn’t listen

Clifford, managing director of big forestry and wood products company Pan Pac, proposed a Covid certification system.
