Are there food names that New Zealand producers would like to protect? Will New Zealand producers still be able to use names like gruyere, edam and parmesan on their products?

Come along to our EU-NZ FTA Workshop series for the opportunity to hear from Lead Negotiator, Martin Harvey of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the current status of the negotiation and, more specifically, how you can have your say on which geographical indications (GIs) are included in the agreement.

Dr John Barker, Principal of John Barker Law is a leading authority on GIs and will provide participants with an introduction to the GI concept and what GI protection in the EU-NZ FTA could mean for NZ businesses.

Consultation on the EU-NZ FTA: Geographical Indications

As part of our negotiations for a free trade agreement with the EU, New Zealand has been presented with a list of product names which are protected in the EU as geographical indications (GIs). The EU is looking for New Zealand to recognise and protect these names as GIs. There is also an opportunity for New Zealand to provide the EU with a list of New Zealand product names for consideration as GIs to be protected in the EU.

We are currently seeking:

  • submissions on the Eu’s list of GIs

  • nominations for New Zealand products names for consideration as GIs in the EU

The closing date for submissions is 19 March 2019.

Speakers

Martin Harvey, Lead Negotiator, Trade and Economic Group, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Martin Harvey took up his appointment as Lead Negotiator in the Trade and Economic Group in April 2017. He is currently responsible for New Zealand’s FTA processes with the European Union and with the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Mr Harvey joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984 and has served in Canberra, in Geneva as New Zealand Deputy Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and as New Zealand High Commissioner to Singapore from 2008 to 2010.  From 2010 to 2012, he was Director of the Europe Division, and from 2012 to 2017 he was Divisional Manager for Trade Negotiations.

Mr Harvey has worked extensively in the area of trade policy, including Closer Economic Relations (CER) with Australia, the GATT Uruguay Round of trade negotiations, the WTO, EU trade relations and more recently on a range of free trade agreement negotiations.  From 2004 to 2007, Mr Harvey was lead negotiator for New Zealand’s FTAs with ASEAN and Malaysia, and he also led negotiations with the GCC from 2007 to their conclusion in October 2009.  From 2012-14, he was lead negotiator for the Korea-New Zealand FTA.

Mr Harvey has also been seconded to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, Victoria University’s Institute of Policy Studies and to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to work on climate change issues, including New Zealand’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.  He was a senior manager in the New Zealand Climate Change Office of the Ministry for the Environment from 2003 to 2004.
